Tony Hughes8th Dan Jiu Jitsu + Loads More
Head of EJJF

In 1954 Mr T.Hughes (yours Truly) aged 9 3/4 enrolled at Jenkins St. Jiujitsu club, known as the Kano society. I trained at the club for nine years mainly in Jiujitsu, but in 1957 I took up Judo as a second subject followed by Aikido in 1959 and Karate in 1960. I was not a serious pupil of the last two subjects. In 1964 I went to live and work in London and visited most of the many top clubs there as a guest. I returned to the west midlands with 1st Dan Jiujitsu 1st Kyu Judo from the international Judo and Jiujitsu league, 2nd Kyu Aikido and 3rd Kyu Karate. I opened my own club in 1966 at 425 Sqn ATC Aldridge, the same year I joined Kyu Shin Kan Ivor road Birmingham, Studied Aikido with Nakozaio and Karate with Kanazawa, other instructors were R. H Bleakeman founder of the Atemi Jutsu and 3rd Dan Judo. J.M Brown 2nd Dan Karate and Judo, Les Hard 3rd Dan Judo, 2nd Dan Aikido, 1st Dan karate. I enrolled in Budo GB 1967, Kyu Shin Kan had no Jiujitsu section so I took the exam for 2nd Dan Atemi Jutsu, then took the grading in Aikido for 1st Kyu and karate 2nd Kyu.
In 1970 K. Abbe was back in the country teaching, I attended as many courses as I could in the midlands, Cheshire, Stafford and Chigwell Essex. I passed for 3rd Dan Atemi Jutsu, 1st Dan Judo and Aikido but remained forever a 1st Kyu karate. 1971 after finding Mr Hipkiss at his osteopathy clinic in Sutton Coldfield I took the 3rd Dan exam in Jiujitsu.
Throughout the 1970s and 80s I trained regularly on the Budo courses at every venue the school moved to except one, Ivor road Sparkhill to Temple St in the city centre (that’s the one I missed), Wharf road Kings Norton and Pershore road Stirchly, I got my 6th Dan Atemi Jutsu at Pershore road in 1983 and 7th Dan at my Club 1988, from Mr Bleakman, I never saw him again after that, Ill health forced his retirement.
I got my 4th Dan Jiujitsu in 1977 from Mr Hipkiss he died a year or two later, I was awarded 3rd Dan Atado (Chinese Kempo) by Master Leong Fu, 3rd Dan Aikido from Mr Bleakman in 1983 because two of my pupils got their 2nd Dan, I never progressed beyond 2nd Dan in Judo or 1st Kyu Karate despite being well connected within B.A.S.K.A
1983 I joined the international Budo federation, demonstrated kine-no kata assisted by S. Fordpowell at IBF European championships. Did a course at IBF UK, HQ Sittingbourne.
1984 I was invited to be Jiujitsu coach on IBF summer camp in Kent
1985 Invited back to be Jiujitsu coach on IBF summer camp, this time under the gaze of Peter Schoneville 7th Dan IBF president
1986 Invited back again to summer camp, this time appointed Jiujitsu national coach UK
1987 Still IBF national coach my Jiujitsu graded raised to 6th Dan because in Europe Atemi Jutsu is a style of Jiujitsu, I thought it was cheating but accepted it anyway , not wishing to appear ungrateful
1999 Started attending courses with IMAF
2000 Trained with S.Sato 9th Dan Jiujitsu 8th Dan Judo M.kondo 7th Dan Judo 6th Dan Aikido Bill Wood 7th Dan Judo
